The Project is Just Underway

Of course I am a really noob in this place, so it was a great thing that they found me a really good local assistant. She used to work for a delivery service called Pengiriman express and she seems to know the city of Jakarta like it was the back of her hand. The project is going to take about six months if it all goes exactly as planned, but of course in the three decades that I have been managing large construction projects that has not ever happened. Things always go wrong and you have to allow for bad weather and things not getting where they need to be, when they need to be there. I think that I shall be able to get this one in under budget if I manage it well, but only if the whole project is going to be on the right path as long as it is supposed to be.

The language barriers here are really significant. A lot of the people working here are from Singapore, brought in because that is where you find people with experience in large projects. They have skyscrapers every place that you turn, since it is a small island and there is a lot of room in the sky, but hardly any down at ground level. They all speak English which is great for me, but hardly any of them can communicate directly with the local Indonesians. In fact there are scores of languages in this country, although they have a lingua franca that a majority of them speak. It really depends on which island you are on as to what the local folks speak and of course there are a vast number of islands in this archipelago. I am going to have to do the best that I can.
